On 3,400 acres in northeast Florida, they're taking a holistic approach to forestry management: selective harvesting, controlled burning, and reintroduction of the longleaf pine ecosystem. Historically, longleaf pine was THE pine of the Southern United States, but today, less than 1% of the South's natural stands remain. So what's to be gained in reestablishing an ecosystem that has nearly disappeared?
